Details of event
The Malaysian Open 2010 will be staged at Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort from the 22nd – 28th of February 2010. The tournament is an official Sony Ericsson WTA Tour sanctioned tournament and will attract some of the Tour’s most globally recognizable names current stars and the next generation champions to Malaysia.
Taking advantage of the popularity of women’s tennis, the Event will become part of the WTA Tour schedule from 2010, and will be the 1st time Malaysia becomes a stop on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendar. The Event will have strong media interest and appeal as the players will be competing to earn valuable world ranking points.
The tournament which includes both a singles and a doubles competitions will see 16 doubles teams and 32 singles players competing in a knockout style competition held over the course of seven days providing unprecedented coverage to viewers and spectators alike. It will be broadcast both on domestic terrestrial television as well as international satellite networks around the world, to over 300 million households.
The Malaysian Open will incorporate a variety of activities away from the tennis so spectators to the Events will be occupied in between matches. There will also be a full Event Village inclusive of public entertainment areas, interactive zones, exhibitions, quality public catering, tennis clinics, autograph session with the WTA Tour players, and F&B outlets for spectators to take advantage of away from the tennis.
An integral part of the Event is the extensive Player Development Programme linked to the Malaysian Open to help develop the game within Malaysia and promote healthy living through sport at the grassroots level. The components of the programme consist of Qualifying Tournaments for one Malaysian player to gain direct entry to the Main Draw of the Event; Player Training to improve their game; Player Support to regional tournaments; Mini-Tennis Roadshows; Themed Roadshows - to promote the event in a fun atmosphere and a grassroots programme during the Event to give young players an insider’s look at a WTA Tour event.
