SYNOPSIS

UiTM Faculty of Music in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre are delighted to present the 8th Malaysian Composers Concert Series 2017.

The concert series aims to promote and nurture new composition works as well as to nurture student performers to perform new works. Furthermore, it encourages the creations and performances of new works within the society, which broadens the local musical scene.

This year's series promises the premieres of many new works by student composers, young composers and established composers such as the internationally renowned Paul Elwood and Dr. Tazul Izan Tajuddin. These concerts also showcase the pool of talents at the UiTM Faculty of Music, displaying both composition and performance prowess: Dr. Nathan Fischer, Dr. Masashi Kishimoto, Max Riefer, Khairil Johari Johar, Adam Masumi, Raja Alif, Yusri Hamid, Ainolnaim Azizol, Alia Farahin, Amanina Alwani and Rayner Naili.

Five concerts are scheduled in this series, each with its own theme held over five days.

  • Day 1: The Beat of the Soul by UiTM Chamber Choir, Conductor: Dr. Masashi Kishimoto
  • Day 2: Malaysian Art and Pop Songs
  • Day 3: Connecting Beats Malaysia Vol. 2 - Twisted Topography by Max Riefer and The UiTM Percussion Ensemble
  • Day 4: Snapshots of Musical Creativity - UiTM Chamber Orchestra, Conductor: Dr. Tazul Izan Tajuddin
  • Day 5: Malaysia Meets Australia: Contemporary Works for Guitar Trio

UiTM - klpac2017 8thComposers Concert Series

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (klpac) is proud to announce the 2017 8th Composers Concert Series which will be held at Pentas 2 klpac, Saturday 25th November, 2017.

The ongoing concert series is organized by the Faculty of Music, UiTM in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) to promote and introduce new composition works, in particular, works by promising young composers. The concert series aimed at nurturing the creation and performance of new works to help enrich the local musicscene. It serves as an alternative platform for young budding Malaysian composers to showcase their diversity in talents and artistic musical styles in their compositions. The concert series also provides an opportunity to celebrate and introduce the talents of young emerging composers to the local music audience.

The continuous creation of new works is important in fostering and preserving the artistic, musical, and intellectual culture of local musicians. It is hoped that the composer concert series will serve as a platform for new works by students and young contemporary Malaysian composers as part of the effort in preserving and continuing the nation's musical and cultural heritage. The main features of the 8th Composers Concert Series are the Young Composers Competition and performance by UiTM New Music Ensemble comprising Ahmad Munir Mahzair (concert master), Associate Professor Dr Chong Yew Yoong (principle cellist), students and faculty members.

The 8th Composers Concert Series event is led by Associate Professor Dr Tazul Tajuddin, with Adam Masumi as coordinator, and all composers in the faculty's Composition program.

We are privileged and honored to have the patronage of HRH Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin ibni Tunku Muhriz for this year's main event, the composition competition for solo piano and chamber ensemble. For the past 2 years, composers Associate Professor Dr. Michael Smetanin (Australia) and Ingolv Harlaand (Norway) acted as judges for the Composers Competition. Special judges for this year's event include Associate Professor Dr Paul Elwood (USA) and Associate Professor Emeritus Khairil Johari Johar (Malaysia) as juries.

UiTM - klpac2017 8th Composers Concert Series

The composition competition is open from 31st August to 31st October. Please submit one work for solo piano and chamber ensemble via email with the subject line "Tunku Zain Piano and Chamber Ensemble Composition Competition 2017 UiTM-klpac Composers Concert Series 2017@klpac".

Eligibility
The competition is open to all composers of any age and nationality. Current students are also encouraged to participate.

Competition Guidelines

  • Please submit an original work for solo piano and chamber ensemble between 7 and 10 minutes in duration.
  • Theme about Malaysia is encouraged but not compulsory.
  • Scores for a solo piano (compulsory) and chamber ensemble (maximum): 4 violin I, 4 violin II, 3 viola, 2 cello, 1 double bass, 1 flute, 1 Bb clarinet, 1 oboe, 1 bassoon, 1 F horn, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 2 percussionists (with a conductor)
  • Works must be written only for the above ensemble instruments or selection of instruments.
  • Works may include non-interactive electroacoustic elements (e.g., CD playback), but not live electronics or amplified instruments.
