Shakespeare Goes Bollywood weaves stories of love, betrayal, defeat and revenge, into a seamless tale of Shakespearean proportion, but with a Bollywood flavour.
The play begins with the thirteen year old SAVITRI, meeting CHACHAJI, a wandering storyteller who trades stories for rupees. Through Chachaji’s narration, Savitri is transported to the holy city of Varanasi during the last days of the Delhi Sultanate to witness a tale of interreligious love, and all the complications that follow.
From the ill-fated love affair between RAGHUMAN, son of a goat herder and JYOTHI, daughter of a money lender, to the manipulation of KAPULASUNDARAJA, by his facially unappealing greedy daughters, GUNGUNA and RAJEE; to the revenge-driven saga of an orphaned son, BILLU, Shakespeare Goes Bollywood brings back the amazing flavour of Hindustani magic through stories, music and dance.

A recipe

“When all of India’s a stage,
Her men and women do reincarnate.”

1 kg of Shakespearean lovers’ hearts
1 bag of rice’s worth of fair flesh
1 clove of prejudiced love
2 bowls of tears from jealous sisters
1 vial of poison
3 pieces of ghostly warnings
7 packets of well-loved Bollywood numbers
3 bags of brightly coloured bangles

1.             Dice hearts and flesh into bite-sized pieces. Wash and drain using interfamily conflict.
2.             Marinate all in the bowl of tears and poison. Leave to stand until intermission.
3.             Peel the prejudiced love and slice thinly.
4.             Heat up the stage. Sauté sliced prejudiced love with ghostly warnings till soft.
5.             Add marinated heart and flesh. Cook over bright lights till tender.
6.             Add in the Bollywood numbers while lip-synching. Stir to mix well with original choreography.
7.             Reduce heat to 16th century India. Simmer till plot thickens or till colour turns farcical.
8.             Remove from heat and garnish with brightly coloured bangles.
9.             Serve while extravagant.
